Key West Weekly Editorial: We have a home!
Just as Henry Flagler extended his vision to the southernmost city 100 years ago, the Weekly Newspapers are spreading into Key West with the establishment of our new digs at 604 Truman Avenue.
We have notified the governor who said he would be down on the very next train and advised us to muster all of the island’s photographers, politicians, and socialites for a tickertape parade that will begin at Truman & Simonton, head down Duval to Greene Street and then up Simonton again.
The celebration will continue into the next week, through Spring Break and should peak around Lobster Mini-Season. The hangover could last until Fantasy Fest.
In the meantime, we will still beat the streets, finding all the interesting local news that is fit to print. Our focus will be centered on entertainment, local politics, and community events like this past weekend’s Chef Classic to benefit the MARC House.
Make sure to check out next weekend’s Little Black Book edition just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Our Mission Statement:
The Weekly Newspapers are a locally owned newspaper group focusing on community news. The publishing company prides itself on community service and activism and seeks to provide news and stories that inform, enlighten, inspire and entertain.

“Nothing Famous, Just Better”
Chef Patti Cook developed her culinary skills out of necessity.
“I was a really picky eater as a child, and my mother was a terrible cook,” she remembered. “I started experimenting, and by the time I was 10 years old, all my friends were coming to my house to eat what I was cooking!”
Her husband and business partner, Frank Hughes, is clearly one of her biggest fans.
“Patti has incredible talent,” he commended. She’s catered events from Ocean Reef to Washington, D.C.

Keys Disease: One Out of Five…
By John Bartus
Us Boomers will likely remember the old Trident gum commercials that used to start with the phrase, “Four out of five dentists recommend Trident gum for their patients who chew gum.” It always left me wondering about what the other dentist – the one out of five – believed would be better than Trident (Taffy? Tire rubber?). Well, dear readers, it seems like the “one out of five” believes some pretty strange things!
A recent poll showed that one out of five Americans believes that our President, Barack Obama, is a follower of Islam. The fact is that Obama is a Christian. He has been a Christian most all of his life, has attended Christian churches, and one of those churches featured a certain Christian pastor who caused Obama no small amount of political indigestion (remember Rev. Jeremiah Wright?). Still, the belief remains with one out of five of us that Obama is a Muslim. Happy Ramadan.
