Dear Residents & Visitors,
The Florida Keys were blessed with a mild hurricane season last year; however as the 2007 hurricane season is upon us we must always be prepared for a more active season this year. Due to our low lying islands and relative isolation at the end of a single roadway, the Florida Keys remain one of the most vulnerable areas of the United States for hurricane strikes.
Islamorada was the center of the strongest hurricane to strike the United States with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 carrying 200 MPH winds and a 17.5’ tidal surge that passed completely over our islands resulting in the loss of over 400 lives. Since that time we have greatly improved forecasting abilities and improved evacuation capabilities, but it remains the personal responsibilities of each of our residents and business owners to be prepared with a Hurricane Plan of their own in the event that a storm once again threatens Islamorada.
Our visitors also need to be aware of the evacuation procedures and emergency resources available to them in case a hurricane threatens the Keys. Most important, if a storm threatens, heed the advice of local authorities and evacuate if ordered.
Islamorada, Village of Islands, is pleased to sponsor this 2007 Hurricane Information Guide. In this guide you will find information from the National Hurricane Center and your local governments, a Hurricane Tracking Map, and additional information you will need to help develop your own Hurricane Plan.
Remember, the time to prepare and have a plan is before a storm threatens. We hope this information helps you in your preparations.
